Meryah Fisher

Neo-soul singer-songwriter and Africana Studies professor Meryah Fisher shares a powerful journey of breaking cycles of trauma, reclaiming self-worth, and finding healing through creativity. After growing up surrounded by instability, she found herself in an 11-year relationship that gradually became emotionally and physically abusive. Music and songwriting became a lifeline, helping Meryah find the strength to leave, rebuild her life, and establish herself as a performer and educator. Drawing from both personal experience and her academic perspective, she also explores the roots of homophobia and transphobia, the intersection of Black and queer identities, and the importance of community in breaking generational patterns. Her story centers on choosing yourself, living authentically, and recognizing that healing can open the door to an entirely different life.
