Francis Martin
Growing up in Texas, Frank Martin found his way into the gay community before eventually moving to California and building a successful career as a radio broadcast engineer, including years at KROQ. Diagnosed with HIV in 1989 and initially given only months to live, Frank survived serious illness and witnessed the devastating loss of countless friends and peers during the AIDS epidemic. As a long-term HIV survivor, he also experienced discrimination and significant barriers to receiving proper healthcare at times. Frank shares his perspective on another important part of his life—the history and evolution of the gay bear community, from BEAR Magazine and San Francisco’s Lone Star Saloon to the gatherings and traditions that continue today. His story offers a firsthand perspective on survival, community, and decades of change in gay life.
