John Soroczak
Marked by childhood trauma and the loss of his father at a young age, John Soroczak entered adulthood questioning the religious and social expectations he grew up with. As he explored his attraction to both men and women and sought therapy to better understand himself, he discovered the Bisexual Center of Southern California, where he finally found community. John went on to help run the center for eight years and represented it in one of the earliest openly bisexual contingents at the Los Angeles Pride Parade. His advocacy also brought difficult encounters, including a public confrontation with Mattachine Society cofounder Harry Hay, who rejected bisexuality as a legitimate identity. Through unconventional relationships, decades of self reflection, and continued community involvement, John ultimately found greater acceptance and peace, later marrying his partner, Paul, while continuing to advocate for bisexual visibility.
